■The term "Boondock"in American English, is stepping out of the lurkdom among RVers and becomes to be a bit widely known to the public. There was just a little information of it in the cyber space about three years ago when I posted the article "Boondocking". Something related to"The Boondock Saints" movie in 1999, or others have been displayed at high ranking in a search engine. However, there is a website named Boondock.com at the present writing.

ブーンドック Boondockという米語は、アメリカで多少知れ渡るようになってきた。記事「Boondocking」を書いた約3年前は、インターネットでBoondockを検索しても僅かな情報しか出て来なかった。検索で上位に引っ掛かるのは1999年の映画「路地裏の聖人達」に関係するものが殆どだった。現在は、URLにBoondockを冠したサイトまである。

■What is Boondocking? If you are an American RVer, you can already know this term. There must be a few Japanese who know this, like me who interested in both the US and RVing. Boondocking is essentially camping without hookups not in a campground nor in a developed area. No matter whether RV Camping or Tent Camping. This term Boondock seems to originate from "bundok" in the word of the Tagalog on which Filipino is based when at American-Philippine War. "bundok"means boonies.

ブーンドッキング Boondokingの意味。アメリカ人RVerなら知っているはずだが、日本人で知っているのは僕みたいなアメリカとRVが好きなマニアだけ。ブーンドッキングとは、基本的にキャンプ場でもなく開発された場所でもない所でフックアップせずに(水や電気等の接続なしに)キャンプする事。 RVであろうとテントであろうと関係ない。この単語のルーツは、フィリピンのタガログ語。(詳しくはブログ記事「Boondocking」を参照)

■ "Dry Camping"is a little bit similar word but completely different from Boondocking. Dry Camping means staying in a campground without hookups, whereas, Boondocking typically means staying in a completely undeveloped area where camping is allowed. Boondocking in Federal or Public Lands where camping is permitted, is called "Dispersed Camping", which is the official term often used by government agencies.

ドライキャンピング Dry Campingという意味が似た単語があるが、ブーンドッキングとは全く異なる。ドライキャンピングはキャンプ場でフックアップせずにキャンプする事。これに対し、ブーンドッキングは大概キャンプが容認された未開地で停泊する事を意味する。キャンプが公に許可された連邦政府管理地でのブーンドッキングは、ディスパーストキャンピング Dispersed Campingと呼ばれ、主に役人が正式用語として使っている。 (詳しくはブログ記事「Dry Camping」と「Dispersed Camping」を参照)

■Why Boondock? Because Stunning Scenery of Mother Nature is waiting for me. Spectacular Desert Views are calling and I must go. (like John Muir) Yes, my answer is quite simple. But there are so many reasons that RVers intend to do. Some people enjoy solitude in boonies not but loneliness. Looking for open field, wild creatures or plants, big red sky or skyful of stars. Budget cut is nothing but results. I wish to boondock during my RV travel in the US as long as time and money allows.

なぜブーンドックするのか？なぜなら、息を呑むほど素晴らしい大自然の絶景が僕を待っている。砂漠の絶景が僕を呼んでいる。そこへ行かずにいられない。そう、僕の答えは全く単純。しかし、RVerにはブーンドックしたくなる理由が沢山ある。人里離れた場所で寂しさとは無縁の孤独を楽しむ人もいる。キャンプ場では味わえない広大な場所、野生の動植物、赤く染まった大空や満天の星空を求めたりする。停泊費削減は結果でしかない。アメリカRV旅行中は、時間やお金が許す限りブーンドックしたいと思っている。

■Who, When Boondock? Needless to point out, Boondocking is deeply involved in the History of RV in the US. As of now, many of aging baby boomers (78 million Americans born between 1946 and 1964) represent almost 30 percent of the U.S. population. There is a research that "Baby Boomers Create RV Travel Boom" A number of them who retired load up their RVs and hit the road. Approx. 9 million RVs include baby boomer's are on the nation's roads. いつ、だれが、ブーンドックするのか? 言わずともがな、ブーンドッキングはアメリカRVの歴史に深く関わっている。現在、高齢化したベビーブーマー世代(1946年から1964年までに生まれた7千8百万人のアメリカ人)は、人口の3割を占めていて、「ベビーブーマーがRV旅行のブームを創っている」という研究調査がある。退職後にRVに荷物を積んで旅行に出る人も多く、そのRVも含め約9百万台のRVがアメリカの道路を走っている。フルタイマーについて知らなければ、以前の記事「フルタイマーの住所」を参照して欲しい。

■Befor Boondocking, you have to expand your understanding of federal code, state law, public morals, regional situations, weather information, balance of nature, ecological systems, etc. Respecting for mother nature, of course. You have to prevent mistakes from your ignorance. In the worst case, you may be shot or arrested in private owned lands or in military areas. In some areas, you may be assaulted by a thug or attacked by a bear, or blown away in a hurricane. I never recommend boondocking to Japanese of those who without English conversational ability. Not only the above knowledge, but also communication especially when they encounter a Federal Park Ranger, a Police Officer or a Border Patrol during boondocking.

ブーンドックをする前に。法律や法令、モラル、地域情勢、気象情報、自然界のバランスや生態系等について知識を広げなければならない。自然を敬う姿勢は当然。無知に起因する間違いを防止しなければならない。最悪の場合、私有地や軍事エリアでは撃たれたり逮捕されたりする。暴漢に襲われたり、熊に襲われたり、ハリケーンに吹き飛ばされたりする地域もある。日本人にブーンドックはお勧めしない。前記の知識に加え、日本人にはパークレンジャーや警官、国境警備員に出くわした時の会話能力が必要だから。
